The South African Women's Day Committee formed in 1986 to recognize the role of women in the long struggle against apartheid in South Africa and celebrate the 30th anniversary of the women's march on Pretoria in 1956. It was part of a growing movement calling for international condemnation and increased pressure to end the South African regime.
