This document released by the YWCA, Current Status of Abortion in Canada, outlines the history of abortion laws in Canada prior to 1969 and after August 28, 1969, when it became legal under certain conditions. The document goes on to describe the different problems with the law and the way in which the law is unjust to women and their right to privacy and healthcare. Along with the organization’s stand on abortion being a matter of freedom of choice, also included are the reasons why sections dealing with abortion in the Criminal Code of Canada should be removed because they interfered with an individual’s right to self-determination and privacy in health matters. The document also outlines some ways to respond to press and media on questions about women’s views on abortion and if they are in support of the YWCA of Canada’s stance.
