In March 1988, the Canadian Advisory Council on the Status of Women (CACSW)/Conseil consultatif canadien sur la situation de la femme (CCCSF) issued this statement outlining their core principles for reproductive health:
1. Reproductive choice is an equality issue.
2. A pregnant woman has the right to determine the best medical treatment for herself or the foetus.
3. Reproductive health services and abortion must be available to women equitably throughout Canada and funded completely by provincial health insurance plans, in keeping with the principles of universality, accessibility, and comprehensiveness as stated in the Canada Health Act.
4. The Criminal Code and provincial regulation must continue to ensure that the best medical practice is observed and no further legislation is warranted.
