Feminist activism from the 1970s to the 1990s opened new spaces for women artists, writers, poets, and performers. Many used their talents to explore women’s lives, challenge prevailing stereotypes, and championing the fight for change. They also demanded that women’s traditional “crafts” such as quilting, embroidery, and knitting be recognized as creative art forms and acknowledged as such.
This section includes examples of buttons and posters, as well as films and music, created as part of feminist activism in this period. Photos also capture the struggles of that era and the women who were part of them. Where possible, we have sought permission from the creators to reproduce different pieces on this website, but many were never signed or attributed. Please contact us if you have a concern.
