Report on West Word VI – August 1990

The West Coast Women and Word’s summer school/writing retreat (West Word VI) took place in Vancouver from July 29 – August 11 1990. This report describes the event which had 22 attendees who attended classes divided into three genres: Poetry, Fiction, and Creative Documentary. As well as attending these classes and social events, there were public readings from women writers including a reading by Claire Harris, sponsored by the Congress of Black Women, and held at the Native Education Centre as well as readings from former West Word instructors Beth Brant and Dionne Brand. The program also included a panel discussion “Subtle Forms of Racism” with panellists Beth Brant, Dionne Brand, Terrie Hamazaki, and Sunera Thobani.
