“Bread and Roses” is a political slogan that unites the demand for fair wages and jobs with a call for respect, dignity and beauty in life. The phrase inspired the poem by James Oppenheim published in 1911 and was later set to music several times. The song has become an anthem of the women’s liberation movement and has been performed by many artists. This recording is by Catherine Silverglen and is reproduced here with permission.
