On Valentine’s Day 1970, the Vancouver Women’s Caucus held a rally and march to mark the beginning of a mass campaign to remove abortion laws from the Criminal Code. People gathered at the steps of the Art Gallery, then marched through downtown Vancouver. The protest stopped outside the Hudson’s Bay at Granville and Georgia, a central intersection, where a theatre skit was performed.
Rhoda Rosenfeld took a series of photographs during the Valentine’s Day event. Viewed as a series, these photos show us the sequence of events and give us a sense of time as the march snakes its way through the Vancouver streets. In the background, you can also see a small group of anti-choice protesters.
A little over two months later, the Abortion Caravan would leave Vancouver on its way to Ottawa where a major protest on abortion rights was being organized.
