Mary Two-Axe Early was a Mohawk leader from Kahnawake, and an activist who founded the organization Equal Rights for Indian Women. She was key in fighting the Indian Act’s discriminatory policy that denied Status Indian women treaty rights if they married non-Status men. She was the first woman to have her status reinstated when the policy was reversed.
