The largely female workforce at Radio Shack's Barrie warehouse, organized by the United Steelworkers of Canada, went on strike for a first contract in August 1979. Issues included hazardous lifting conditions, no job security, inconsiderate treatment and favouritism. The Radio Shack strike was one of several lengthy strikes in Ontario led by women and marked by serious strike-breaking and anti-union tactics by the company. The strike ended in April 1980 after a court ruling that Radio Shack has bargained in bad faith. .
