“While not the only women’s organizations to promote the Women’s Movement in Newfoundland and Labrador, the Status of Women Councils have played a vital role in the fight for Women’s Equality since the 1970s.” http://www.teachaboutwomen.ca/womencouncil/

The Teach about Women website lists the following councils. Each link provides a description of the work of that council. At the bottom of each council page are links to relevant documents, interviews and photographs.

• Bay St. George Status of Women Council
• Central NL Status of Women Council
• Corner Brook Status of Women Council
• Gander Status of Women Council
• Gateway Status of Women Council
• Labrador West Status of Women Council
• Mokami Status of Women Council
• St. John’s Status of Women Council (formerly known as the Newfoundland Status of Women Council)

In 1984, the Newfoundland Status of Women Council officially changed its name to the St. John’s Status of Women Council (SJSWC) in recognition of the other Status of Women Councils that had begun since its inception. Over the years, the SJSWC produced over 100 newsletters and documents. You can view these on the Teach About Women website at http://www.teachaboutwomen.ca/historicdocs/
