In 1984, the newly formed Organization of Spouses of Military Members (OSOMM) began distributing newsletters to military wives living at the Canadian Forces Base in Penhold, Alberta. The newsletters included OSOMM members’ demands for a family dental plan, daycare, a school lunchroom, traffic lights at a dangerous intersection, and a spouses’ resource centre. After OSOMM had sued the Department of National Defence and gained prominence in the national media, military wives across the country became mobilized, OSOMM became a national organization, and OSOMM’s newsletters were distributed nationally.
