In the 1970s and 1980s, women from Northern Ontario organized conferences and networks to discuss issues affecting them. One of the first of such conferences was “Northern Women: A Special Situation”, held in Sudbury in 1979. From 1981 to1984, four more conferences were organized by the Northeastern Ontario Women’s Conference (NEOWC) collective, which included activists from a number of communities such as Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie, Timmins, New Liskeard, Hearts, and Elliot Lake.
