BIOLOGY is not DESTINY

This undated button with the slogan “Biology is not destiny” challenges the notion that a woman’s characteristics and role in life are determined by her biology. The phrase comes from Simone DeBeauvoir’s writings in which she says, “Biology is not destiny. The reduction of women to the feminine, sexualized lesser sex is an artifice constructed of vested prejudices that deprive women (and the world) of our fullest existence.”  De Beauvoir’s book ‘The Second Sex’ played an important role in raising feminist consciousness and activism in the 1960s and ’70s.
