Vive la Difference

This button with the slogan “Vive La Difference: Lesbian and Gay Pride Day June 26, 1988” was produced for the 1988 Toronto Pride Day parade which featured homemade floats, street performances, and a barricade-free route along Yonge Street. The event also marked the inauguration of the temporary AIDS memorial in Cawthra Park and featured grand marshals Svend Robinson, Canada’s first openly gay MP, and Karen Andrews, a legal pioneer for same-sex benefits. Despite Toronto Mayor Art Eggleton’s refusal to give Pride an official proclamation, the event was a significant moment of LGBTQ+ pride, activism, and remembrance.
