1995 Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing (Commemorative Pin) Photo of one of two commemorative pins in the Rise Up collection associated with the 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing. There is also a photo of the official set of two pins. The Beijing Conference followed three previous global conferences on women held between 1975-1995. The first in Mexico City (1975) marked International Women’s Year and the beginning of the United Nations International Decade of Women. It was followed by Copenhagen (1980) and Nairobi (1985). More than 17,000 participants attended the Beijing Conference, including government delegates at the negotiations, NGO representatives, civil servants and media representatives. It ended with 189 United Nations member states, including Canada, committing themselves to the Beijing Platform for Action, which defined actions to be taken to advance women’s equality. This variant features a stylized abstract design incorporating a female profile within a circular emblem, accompanied by geometric lines suggesting movement and global connection. The visual language emphasizes symbolism and internationalism, reflecting the global scope of the conference and its role in shaping transnational feminist dialogue.
