1995 Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing (Commemorative Pin) Photo of one of two commemorative pins in the Rise Up collection produced for the 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing. The Beijing Conference followed three previous global conferences on women held between 1975-1995. The first in Mexico City (1975) marked International Women’s Year and the beginning of the United Nations International Decade of Women. It was followed by Copenhagen (1980) and Nairobi (1985). More than 17,000 participants attended the Beijing Conference, including government delegates at the negotiations, NGO representatives, civil servants and media representatives. It ended with 189 United Nations member states, including Canada, committing themselves to the Beijing Platform for Action, which defined actions to be taken to advance women’s equality. This pin incorporates a stylized emblem in green referencing global unity and gender equality with the ‘95 Beijing in gold on a red banner below.
