Fleck Strike (Knitted Doll) Photo of a knitted doll made during the 1978 strike at Fleck Manufacturing. The dolls were created and knitted by Christiane Somann, one of the striking women. Used as a fundraiser, making the dolls also helped Christiane cope with what was happening during the strike, particularly the intimidation by the large OPP force standing shoulder to shoulder in full riot gear and blocking the road. For Christiane, it evoked memories of Nazis doing the same thing in the streets of the Polish town when she was a child. The psychological toll on Christiane and other women strikers was profound, but their camaraderie and mutual support gave them strength and perseverance.
