Rise Up! Feminist Digital Archive
A Digital Archive of Feminist Activism
In July 1990, the Oka Peace Camp was established in solidarity with the Mohawks of Kanehsatake who rose up in defense of their unceded ancestral lands after the proposed extension of a golf course and the construction of condos on a sacred graveyard. Mohawk women, including Ellen Gabriel, played a central role in the uprising, which lasted for 78 intense days. The peace camp was attended by many feminist activists from various organizations, including the National Action Committee on the Status of Women (NAC), the Black Women’s Collective in Toronto, Jewish Women’s Committee to End the Occupation of the West Bank and Gaza (JWCEO), and more.
