A Digital Archive of Feminist Activism
The Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport (CAAWS) was established in 1981 to provide a safe, feminist space where controversial and difficult topics, such as homophobia in women’s sport, could be addressed. Since then, the organization has been dedicated to the advancement of women in all aspects of Canadian sport and physical activity. CAAWS was rebranded as Canadian Women & Sport in 2020 and continues to promote gender equity within Canada’s sport system.
Formally launched in 1981, Canadian Women & Sport was founded to advocate for progressive change within Canada’s sport system. Its goal was to see the enhanced presence of girls and women at all levels and in all areas – as athletes, participants, leaders, officials, coaches and trainers.
The founders, many of whom remain active advocates today, were leaders in national, provincial and community sport and physical activity groups. Within two years, CAAWS was working to meet several defined objectives:
Formerly known as the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity (CAAWS), the organization rebranded to Canadian Women & Sport in 2020. Still passionate advocates for women and girls, the rebrand reinvigorated the organization’s powerful mission with a new name and a new look.
