The Metro Toronto Women’s Credit Union was an alternative financial institution established in 1978 to support Canadian women and meet their financial needs. It recognized that women were paid less than men, had less access to funds, and were more likely to face discrimination on the basis of gender or marital status in getting access to credit. The credit union provided services including loan options through a collective member’s pool, savings accounts like RRSP’s and RHOP’s, and offered educational services such as counselling sessions or seminars. It closed in 1982.
