The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) was established in 1966, coinciding with the adoption of collective bargaining legislation in the federal public service. Soon after, PSAC signed its first collective agreements with the federal government, and in 1991, PSAC members held the largest national strike by a single union in Canada. The PSAC is the largest union in the federal public sector, representing nearly 240,000 workers in all provinces and territories. In 1976, the union established the Equal Opportunities Committee to address women’s issues, and elected its first female national officer, Aileen Manion.
