Rise Up! Feminist Digital Archive
A Digital Archive of Feminist Activism
The Ryerson Women’s Centre was funderd by the Ryerson Students’ Union and operated under a collective model. The centre’s Collective members engaged in a range of political feminist initiatives, including holding the first Take Back the Night march on campus and organizing the annual International Women’s Day Fair. Its drop-in space provided crucial supports and services for women, including a feminist library, child-care support hotline, and women’s self-defence workshops. In April 1989, after the conservative leadership of the Ryerson Student Union took away the Ryerson Women’s Centre drop-in space, Collective members launched a campus-wide campaign and secured a new space for the women’s centre.
The centre is Now known as the Centre for Women and Trans People and is one of the Equity Centres of the Toronto Metropolitan University Students’ Union, formerly Ryerson.
