More about Second Story Press

Adapted from Second Story and other materials

Second Story Press was co-founded in 1988 by Liz Martin, Lois Pike, Margie Wolfe, Carolyn Wood, Christa Van Daele, Judi Coburn, Connie Guberman and Graziela Pimental, Set up as a workers co-operative of women, Second Story aimed to produce feminist books that “supported writers in their exploration of their lives, their history and their changing place in society” and promoted “a diversity of voices, debates an opinion.” This included fiction and non-fiction for adult readers as well as young people.

Second Story was built by a number of women who had been closely involved with feminist publishing and The Women’s Press before a serious internal dispute over a proposed anti-racism policy led to them leaving to start another publishing group.
