More about Vancouver Status of Women

Adapted from a VSW pamphlet

Vancouver Status of Women was organized in 1971 to bring about changes in legislation and attitudes regarding women. Its objectives were to promote action on The Report of the Royal Commission on the Status of Women in Canada, foster public knowledge of the rights and status of women in Canada, and facilitate communication between individuals and groups concerned about the status of women.

As well as a group of active volunteers, the organization had an office and paid staff, financed by government grants and member donations. An ombud service staff, without charge, assisted women who faced discrimination, including in the areas of employment, pay, rental, and obtaining credit. The VSW also did research on different projects, maintained a women’s resource centre, and operated a speakers’ bureau.

The monthly newspaper Kinesis was provided to the membership for the communication of ideas and information.
