The St. John’s Status of Women Council (originally the Newfoundland Status of Women Council) began publishing its newsletter in 1972 following the release of the Royal Commission on the Status of Women report. The newsletter contained reports on the organization’s activities, articles on women’s issues, information about related events in the community, and poetry. Newfoundland SW Council/St. John’s SW Council is one of several Newfoundland and Labrador Status of Women Councils.
The St. John’s Status of Women Council Newsletter (originally the Newfoundland Status of Women Council) was set up in 1972 following the release of the Royal Commission on the Status of Women report. The SJWC ran a Women’s Centre from various rented homes in the city before buying a house on Military Road, which opened June 25, 1978. This building represents the first Women’s Centre in Canada to be owned by its members and is also the longest continuously running Centre in the country. The NSWC changed its name to the St. John’s Status of Women Council in late 1985 when the Newfoundland and Labrador government set up eight regionally based Status of Women Councils, as follows: • Bay St. George Status of Women Council • Central NL Status of Women Council • Corner Brook Status of Women Council • Gander Status of Women Council • Gateway Status of Women Council • Labrador West Status of Women Council • Mokami Status of Women Council • St. John’s Status of Women Council (formerly known as the Newfoundland Status of Women Council)
