Visual Evidence

This poster advertises the 1987 Visual Evidence exhibition and workshop series on sexuality and sexual imagery, hosted by the Vancouver Artists’ League and the Coalition for the Right to View (CRTV). The event screened videos that had not been submitted to the Film Classification Office and did not impose age restrictions, directly challenging the B.C. Motion Pictures Act, which enforced censorship of explicit materials. The CRTV was a coalition of media workers, educators, librarians, trade unions, LGBTQ+ organizations and businesses, and others who opposed censorship and the suppression of materials at both the provincial and federal levels of government.

This material is reproduced here with the permission of Press Gang, a feminist printing and publishing collective active in Vancouver from the early 1970s to 2002. Posters by Press Gang are held at the Simon Fraser University Archives.
