Search tips and tricks

Highlighting

You may have noticed that searches result in your search terms being highlighted. You can use this to determine if your search is pulling up the type of material you are looking for.

AND, OR, NOT

The search engine by default looks for your keywords as an "or". So, if you searched for "red table", it would find results that has the words red and/or table. If you want to make sure that your search contains all of your keywords, put a + symbol in front of the keywords (+red +table). If you want to have your results to match everything with the word "red" but NOT the word "table", structure your search like this "+red -table".

Partial word matches

The search engine will find partial words. So, for instance, if you search for "kindergarten", it will also find results with the word "kind" in it.

Searching exact phrases

If you put an exact phrase into the search field, any results with that exact phrase will be boosted to the top of your search.

Synonyms

This search engine has the capability of finding synonyms, but we haven't added them in yet. So, for example, "reproductive rights" could be twinned with "choice" or "abortion". Which means that if you search for "abortion", material with any of those terms will be in your search results. Send us your suggestions for synonyms.
