More about Committee Against the Deportation of Immigrant Women

The Committee Against the Deportation of Immigrant Women, organized in the late 1970s, advocated for landed status for a number of Jamaican-born domestic workers in Toronto who had come to Canada through the West Indian Domestic Scheme and were facing deportation. The group argued that Canadian government practices were both racist and sexist, with profound effects on these women’s family and personal relationships and leaving them vulnerable to exploitation. They also addressed issues of physical violence and sexual harassment at work.
