The International Ladies Garment Workers’ Union (ILGWU) was a union dedicated to fighting against sweatshops in Canada and the United States. The ILGWU was first created in 1900 in the United States, and expanded to Canada between 1910 and 1911 after establishing six locals in Montreal, Toronto, and Winnipeg. The ILGWU represented garment workers in their fight to organize and take labour action against exploitative working conditions. In 1995, the ILGWU and the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union (ACTWU) merged to form the Union of Needletrades, Industrial and Textile Employees (UNITE).
