The creation of Studio D has been attributed to ongoing lobbying for a women’s studio at the National Film Board (NFB), and particularly the leadership of Kathleen Shannon. Following the Royal Commission on the Status of Women, a growing movement started to pressure governments to act on women’s equality particularly within government agencies themselves.
