Claire Prieto’s film Some Black Women (1977) looks at the lives and roles of Black women in Canada during the mid-1970s, noting that from the time of Harriet Tubman, “Black women have struggled to realize themselves as women and as creative human beings.” In 1989, Prieto co-directed the NFB film Black Mother/Black Daughter with Sylvia Hamilton, and also directed Older, Stronger, Wiser, which profiles five Black women living in rural and urban Canada between the 1920s and 1950s.
