Claire Prieto’s film Some Black Women (1977) looks at the lives and roles of Black women in Canada during the mid-1970s, noting that from the time of Harriet Tubman, “Black women have struggled to realize themselves as women and as creative human beings.” In 1989, Prieto co-directed the NFB film Black Mother/Black Daughter with Sylvia Hamilton, and also directed Older, Stronger, Wiser, which profiles five Black women living in rural and urban Canada between the 1920s and 1950s.
“Home to Buxton” (1987) explores the history of the Black community of Buxton, Ontario during its annual homecoming weekend in 1986. Known as one of the first black filmmakers in Canada, Prieto co-founded the Black Film & Video Network (BFVN) in 1988.
